Mitchelle L. Herman is an Assistant Professor at the School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD) at James Madison University, joining in 2024. She holds an M.F.A. and B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her interdisciplinary practice merges art and technology, addressing themes like tech culture, feminist and disability politics, and conceptualism. Prior to academia, she served as Head of Digital Experience at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, overseeing web strategy, and held roles at The Phillips Collection and Kennedy Center’s ARTSEDGE.
Educational Background: M.F.A. and B.F.A. in Visual Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art (2020 and earlier).
Research Interests: Herman’s work critically engages with technology’s societal impact, blending digital media, sculpture, and performance. Her projects often explore identity, visibility, and the intersection of human and machine through installations like Untitled (To Bear the Weight) and Invisibility. She employs materials ranging from marble and resin to algorithmic processes and interactive sensors, reflecting a commitment to questioning technological and cultural norms.
Exhibitions and Recognition: Featured in venues such as the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, Corcoran Gallery (Washington, DC), and The Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington. Her work has been covered by Hyperallergic, The Washington Post, and NPR. She is a member of the DC Arts Center’s Sparkplug collective.
