Michele Granshaw is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh, within the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. She holds affiliate faculty positions in the Global Studies Center, European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center, Gender, Sexuality, and Women Studies Program, and Cultural Studies. Her research examines marginalized communities’ use of theatre and performance as tools for identity formation, resistance, and survival, with a focus on U.S. and Irish contexts. She has authored Irish on the Move: Performing Mobility in American Variety Theatre (2019) and is completing a second book on post-Civil War theatre desegregation. Granshaw’s work has been supported by awards including the 2021 Dietrich School Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award and a Franklin Research Grant (2024).
Her teaching spans BA, MFA, and PhD programs, mentoring student dramaturgs while maintaining active roles in academic organizations like the American Theatre and Drama Society. Recent research projects include investigations into transatlantic Irish performance and Belfast sectarianism, supported by grants from the Pitt Momentum Fund and ESC Faculty Research programs. Granshaw balances scholarly output with leadership roles, co-organizing ATDS First Book Bootcamp and serving on the Mid-America Theatre Conference’s Theatre History Symposium Committee.
