Michelle E. Afkhami is an Associate Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami. She serves as Director of the University of Miami Greenhouse and Joint Director of BioReach. Her research focuses on the ecology, evolution, and genomics of beneficial species interactions, particularly plant-microbial mutualisms such as rhizobia, mycorrhizal fungi, and fungal endophytes, as well as broader microbial communities.

Her lab investigates how microbial landscapes impact plant distributions, mutualism-driven range expansions, habitat fragmentation effects on microbiomes, and the role of microbiomes in sustainable agriculture and ecosystem restoration. She employs long-term field experiments, mathematical modeling, and molecular lab techniques to build predictive knowledge of these systems.
