Dr. Michelle Danyluk is a Professor in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Program at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Citrus Research and Education Center. Her work bridges academic research and practical extension services focused on microbial food safety in produce systems.
Her research interests center on microbial food safety and quality, with emphasis on the microbiology of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and juices. She investigates bacterial pathogens in produce environments including production, packing and processing settings, their movement mechanisms, and mitigation strategies with direct public health implications. Her extension program delivers critical training on FSMA, HACCP, GAPs and specialized food safety protocols for agricultural stakeholders.
Dr. Danyluk's scholarly output reveals strong focus areas in pathogen dynamics in agricultural water systems, produce contamination pathways, and post-harvest intervention strategies. Her recent publications demonstrate particular expertise in Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes behavior on cantaloupe, mangoes, and tomatoes, along with agricultural water safety assessments.
- Member of International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Food (ICMSF), 2016
- IAFP Executive Board Member, 2019
She actively mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers while leading significant multi-institutional food safety initiatives. Her laboratory team conducts field and controlled environment studies on pathogen behavior in agricultural settings, with strong emphasis on translating research into practical food safety solutions for growers and processors. Current projects include agricultural water safety assessments and development of practical pathogen mitigation strategies for fresh produce systems.
