Dr Michelle Chamoun is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Frazer Institute, University of Queensland (UQ), within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences. Her research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, antibody-dependent serum resistance, and inflammation. She holds a PhD in Microbiology from Griffith University (2020), where her thesis explored Interleukin-17's role in E. coli chronic urinary tract infections in mice. After a hiatus to work in biotechnology and pathology (2020–2023), she returned to academia in 2023 to join A/Prof. Timothy Wells' lab. She has secured a LINC grant to investigate E. coli in bloodstream infections and currently supervises two students.
Her research interests bridge immunology and microbiology, addressing mechanisms of chronic infections, host-pathogen interactions, and therapeutic strategies. Key areas include molecular diagnosis of pathogens, inflammation modulation, and immune response dynamics. She has contributed to studies on flagellar-driven bacterial persistence, bladder defense strategies, and diagnostic techniques for urinary tract infections.
Dr Chamoun's work has led to publications in journals like Microbiology Australia, Burns and Trauma, and FASEB Journal. Her current projects aim to translate findings into clinical applications for chronic wound infections and bloodstream infections. She collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, combining academic and industry expertise to advance translational research.
