Michelle Baker is a Professor and Dean in the Department of Biology at the University of Utah, affiliated with the College of Science. She holds a PhD in Biology (Ecosystem Ecology, Hydrogeology) from the University of New Mexico (1998) and a BS in Biology from Lafayette College (1992). Her research focuses on understanding how water movement influences ecosystem structure and function, employing interdisciplinary methods from ecology, hydrology, and geochemistry. Key themes include hydrologic linkages in watersheds, nutrient cycling, and carbon dynamics.
Teaching responsibilities include courses like General Ecology, Biogeochemistry, and Special Topics in Biology. Notable awards include the 2017 Pioneers of Progress Award for Science and Technology and the 2016 Governor's Medal for Science and Technology. Her work has been recognized for bridging ecological and hydrological sciences, particularly in mountain and urban environments.
Recent research emphasizes nutrient dynamics in rivers, stream-lake interactions, and urban environmental impacts. Over 70 peer-reviewed articles highlight contributions to biogeochemistry and ecohydrology. Mentored numerous graduate students in watershed sciences and biology, fostering their contributions to environmental research and policy.
