Matthew Cohen is a Professor of Forest Water Resources and Watershed Systems at the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences (FFGS), University of Florida, where he has been a faculty member since March 2006. He also holds affiliate faculty status in the IFAS Soil and Water Science Department, School of Natural Resources and Environment, and Center for Environmental Policy.
His educational background includes a PhD completed in 2003. Prior to his PhD, he worked as a research intern with the World Agroforestry Center in Kenya. From 2003-2004, he worked with the Center for Environmental Policy and the Wetland Biogeochemistry Laboratory, and from 2005-2006, he was an Assistant Research Scientist in Soil and Water Science at UF.
Dr. Cohen's research focuses on watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry, with an emphasis on wetland processes. His work spans three main areas: (1) Florida's spring-fed and blackwater rivers, particularly the interactions between river ecosystems and nutrient supply; (2) the role of geographically isolated wetlands in watershed systems and pattern emergence in wetlands (e.g., peat accretion and carbonate dissolution) in the Big Cypress Preserve and Everglades; and (3) forest water and nutrient yield in plantation forests under regulatory requirements for water quality and quantity. His research adopts a systems-level approach to understanding hydrologic flowpaths from ridges to rivers.
He leads the University of Florida Ecohydrology Lab, which conducts ecosystem process studies in wetlands, streams, lakes, aquifers, and forests, primarily in Florida but addressing general questions applicable elsewhere.
