Michelle A. Amazeen is an Associate Dean of Research and Associate Professor of Mass Communication at Boston University’s College of Communication, where she directs the Communication Research Center. Her research focuses on the intersection of persuasion, misinformation, and media integrity, with particular emphasis on climate disinformation and native advertising. She has contributed to landmark works like The Debunking Handbook 2020 and ranks among Stanford University’s top 2% of global scholars. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications for journalists, policymakers, and the public, addressing how to recognize and counteract misinformation. Notable projects include the Boston University Climate Disinformation Initiative and her upcoming book Content Confusion (MIT Press, 2025).
Education: PhD in Mass Media and Communication (Temple University), MS and BS in Advertising (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). Early career included roles in radio sales, corporate research, and advertising effectiveness at Millward Brown. She transitioned to academia after re-evaluating professional goals during her industry work.
Research Interests: Dr. Amazeen’s work spans misinformation dynamics, climate communication, health communication, and the ethical implications of native advertising. She employs mixed-methods approaches to explore how misinformation spreads, how audiences perceive it, and how interventions like inoculation theory can build public resilience. Her research emphasizes practical strategies for journalists, educators, and policymakers to combat misinformation.
Grants & Collaborations: Co-investigator on the Climate Disinformation Initiative. Collaborations include the Australian Academy of Science, U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Her findings have informed over 60 policy documents globally.
Awards: Recognized in Stanford’s 2021 global top 2% highly-cited scholars list. Named one of 22 leading scholars contributing to The Debunking Handbook 2020.
