Michele Valerie Ronnick is a Distinguished Professor of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Wayne State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on Black Classicism, the classical tradition, and the history of African diasporic engagement with Greek and Latin texts. She holds an M.S.L.S. (1977), M.A. (1986), and Ph.D. (1990) from Florida State University, University of Florida, and Boston University respectively.
Her work emphasizes recovering marginalized Black classicists like William Sanders Scarborough and Helen Maria Chesnutt. She has curated exhibitions such as Black Classicists: A Mural Mosaic, funded by the James Loeb Classical Library Foundation. Notable awards include the 2021 Merita Award and Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Classical Association of New England.
Recent lectures include discussions on Black classicists' contributions to medicine, classical pedagogy equity, and historical narratives. Courses taught in 2023 include Greek Mythology and Latin Literature surveys at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
