Professor Michele Ford is a leading academic in Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Sydney, specializing in labour movements, migration, and industrial relations. She holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong and has authored numerous books and articles on topics such as temporary labour migration, trade union strategies, and gender-based violence in workplaces. Currently, she leads two ARC Discovery Projects focusing on employment relations in Indonesia's fishing industry and generative AI attacks on unions in Southeast Asia, as well as two ARC Linkage Projects addressing gender-based violence in Cambodia's construction sector and barriers to formal employment for people with disabilities in Timor-Leste.
Her research interests include non-traditional labour organization forms, labour internationalism, and the intersection of national and international trade unions. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and actively contributes to policy discussions through roles such as President of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee 44 and advisory boards for institutions like the ANU’s Indonesia Project.
Professor Ford’s publications span academic books, journal articles, and policy reports, with recent works addressing digital activism in union revitalization, authoritarian labour governance, and cross-border mobility politics. Her work frequently bridges academic research with practical policy solutions, emphasizing the role of unions in advocating for workers’ rights in rapidly changing socio-economic landscapes.
