Michele DeStefano is a Professor of Law and the Larry Hoffman Greenberg Traurig Business of Law Chair at the University of Miami School of Law. She is also Affiliated Faculty at Harvard Law School Executive Education and IE Law School. As Founder & Director of LawWithoutWalls (LWOW) and MOVELΔW, she leads global initiatives fostering innovation in law through interdisciplinary collaboration. She co-created the Digital Legal Exchange (DLEX), a non-profit empowering in-house counsel to drive digital transformation within corporations.
Education: J.D., Harvard Law School (magna cum laude); B.A., Dartmouth College (magna cum laude).
Research Interests: Legal innovation, compliance and ethics, legal education, technology in law, and collaborative problem-solving. Her work emphasizes client-centricity, culture-creation, and leadership in legal practice. Notable publications include Legal Upheaval (2018) and Leader Upheaval (2024), which explore innovation and leadership in law.
Awards: Recognized as an ABA Legal Rebel, FT Innovative Lawyer (North America), and finalist for the University of Miami Provost’s Innovation in Teaching Award. Honored as a 'Legendary Lawbreaker' for contributions to gender equity in law.
Grants & Advising: Spearheaded LawWithoutWalls, a global initiative funded by MOVELΔW to train legal professionals in innovation. Advises leading firms like Microsoft, Spotify, and KPMG on legal strategy and transformation. Her work includes designing curricula for digital transformation and ethics in legal practice.
Labs/Teams: LawWithoutWalls (3,000+ members globally), Digital Legal Exchange, and the Compliance Alliance Journal. Overseeing projects like the One Million Hours Pledge to address climate change through legal innovation.
