Michele Baitieri is a Researcher in Medieval Studies at the University of Oslo (UiO), affiliated with the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History. He is part of the ERC-funded MINiTEXTS project under Professor Ildar Garipzanov. His research focuses on Early Medieval Italy and Europe, with expertise in Latin Palaeography, Diplomatics, and Canon Law. Baitieri joined UiO in 2022 after holding positions such as DAAD Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Stuttgart and Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Nottingham.
Education includes a PhD in History from the University of Nottingham (2015–2019), a Diploma in Manuscript Studies from the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (2014–2015), and earlier degrees from the University of Milan and State Archives of Milan. His work emphasizes bishops’ roles, post-Carolingian legal culture, and documentary practices.
Research interests span Italy and Europe between c.750–1050, with notable publications on episcopal diplomacy, Milan’s ecclesiastical structures, and Carolingian script analysis. He has received awards including the DAAD Fellowship and the John Robinson PhD Studentship.
Teaching includes roles at the University of Nottingham, and he contributes to interdisciplinary projects like Zwischen Rom und Mailand. Baitieri’s current projects explore marginalized voices in Early Medieval Latin texts through the MINiTEXTS initiative.
