Michele Baggio is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Connecticut, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Maritime Studies Program at Avery Point. He holds a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Maryland (2012), an M.Sc. in Environmental Economics from the University of York (2001), and a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Verona (1999). Before joining UConn, he worked as a senior researcher and lecturer at ETH Zurich (2010-2013).
His research focuses on the intersection of environmental and health economics, including studies on climate change adaptation, public health outcomes (e.g., asthma, Lyme disease), and the economic impacts of drug policies. Notable projects examine the effects of recreational marijuana laws on violence and junk food consumption, as well as the relationship between free trade agreements and global obesity trends.
Recent publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to policy analysis, such as evaluating water quality improvements in fisheries and modeling regime shifts in resource systems. His work bridges economic theory with empirical methods to address contemporary challenges in natural resource management and public health.
