Michel A. Reniers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), specializing in supervisory control and cyber-physical systems. His research focuses on model-based engineering of supervisory controllers, formal methods, and their applications in high-tech and manufacturing systems such as lithography, automotive, and robotics. He holds a MSc in Computer Science (1994) and PhD (1999) from TU/e. He is a senior member of IEEE, part of the IEEE CSS Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems, and contributed to the European Research Agenda on Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems. He collaborates with industry partners like ASML and Rijkswaterstaat.
Research interests include supervisory control synthesis, modal logics, discrete event systems, and system product lines. He emphasizes formal methods for safety and performance guarantees in embedded systems. His work spans theoretical frameworks and practical applications in manufacturing, autonomous systems, and networked systems. Awards include the Norbert Giambiasi Award (2022) and recognition for partial-order reduction in timed systems (2018).
Academic activities include editorial roles in journals like Discrete Event Dynamic Systems and IEEE Open Journal of Control Systems. He teaches courses on supervisory control, production systems analysis, and cyber-physical systems engineering. His research has been cited over 1,800 times, with contributions to software tools and simulation methodologies for industrial systems.
