Micheal Barnes serves as an Instructor in the Department of Music at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). An accomplished percussionist and educator, he maintains an active performance career while contributing to academic discourse through research and composition.

His research centers on percussion pedagogy, embodied cognition, and conceptual metaphor theory, with emphasis on applying Schenkerian analysis to percussion instruction. Barnes actively commissions new works to expand percussion repertoire, having premiered over two dozen compositions for solo percussion, ensemble, and steel band.

- Second place in the American Prize for Chamber Music (2022) with The Barnes Duo
Barnes is an in-demand clinician who has presented at major international conferences including PASIC and NCPP. His scholarly contributions appear in Percussive Notes and Rhythm! Scene, while his performance credentials include solo appearances with the University of Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra and University of Cincinnati ensembles.
He maintains professional affiliations as a Vic Firth Educational Artist, Marimba One Educational Artist, and Zildjian Artist, and performs with Three by Radio, the 513 Trio, and the Barnes Duo (with flutist Carly Barnes).
