Michal Drechsler is an Assistant Professor in Chemistry Education Research at Karlstad University. His research focuses on teachers' and student teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), particularly regarding students' difficulties and instructional strategies. He investigates how educators select teaching materials and topics, and supports student teachers in addressing their concerns during their initial teaching experiences. He actively contributes to the SMEER (Science, Mathematics, Engineering Education Research) research group and coordinates educational research courses for teachers involved in teacher education.
His work emphasizes the role of textbooks in shaping teaching practices and student understanding, with a strong focus on acid-base chemistry and chemical bonding models. Drechsler explores how models are used in education to align with the 'Nature of Science' perspective and improve conceptual learning. He collaborates on projects analyzing laboratory work negotiations and inquiry-based science teaching in professional development programs.
Notably, Drechsler's research bridges theoretical frameworks with practical classroom applications, aiming to enhance chemistry education through evidence-based strategies. His studies often involve cross-disciplinary comparisons and address Swedish educational contexts, contributing to both teacher training and curriculum development initiatives.
