Dr. Michaela Rogers is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. She holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield (2013) and joined the university in 2019 after prior roles at the University of Salford and extensive practice in social work addressing domestic violence, child protection, and community development. Her research focuses on gender-based violence, marginalization, and social care access, with a particular emphasis on transgender and non-binary communities, elder abuse, and technology-facilitated abuse.
Her key contributions include co-editing Gender-Based Violence: A Comprehensive Guide (Springer, 2023) and developing training tools like the Social Work Online Team Training (SWOTT) toolkit. Rogers has led over 20 funded projects totaling £500k+, including studies on domestic abuse interventions for imprisoned mothers and technology-mediated violence. She co-leads the University of Sheffield's Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Research Network (ShIVAR).
Teaching focuses on social work practice, practitioner research, and qualitative methods. She supervises PhD students exploring topics like child-to-parent violence, trans experiences of abuse, and workplace violence. Rogers collaborates with organizations like Manchester Women’s Aid on initiatives such as the IRIS program, aiming to improve healthcare responses to domestic violence.
Her research highlights structural inequities affecting marginalized groups, including older adults, LGBTQ+ communities, and refugees. Notable grants include evaluations of interventions for imprisoned domestic abuse survivors and projects addressing domestic violence in low-income countries. Rogers also chairs the Domestic Violence and Abuse Special Interest Group of the UK's Association of Child Protection Professionals.
