Professor Michaela Hegglin is a leading academic in Atmospheric Chemistry at the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading. She holds the role of Professor in Atmospheric Chemistry and serves as Visitor Programme Coordinator. Her research focuses on chemistry-climate interactions, stratospheric dynamics, and the impacts of greenhouse gases and air pollution. She actively contributes to major initiatives such as the ESA Water Vapour Climate Change Initiative and the Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI). Professor Hegglin supervises postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, including Hao Ye and Ryan Williams, exploring topics like satellite data validation and stratospheric influences on air quality.
Her work integrates observations from satellites, aircraft, and ground-based systems with Earth System Models to study atmospheric transport and climate coupling. Key research interests include stratospheric ozone trends, radiative forcing, and the role of atmospheric composition in climate variability. She collaborates internationally, leading projects like the SPARC Reanalyses Intercomparison Project.
Professor Hegglin’s research has implications for environmental policy, particularly regarding climate tipping points and ozone layer recovery. She emphasizes science communication and climate impacts on Alpine regions. Her contributions span over 70 peer-reviewed articles and involve interdisciplinary teams addressing pressing global environmental challenges.
