Jens Muhle is a Researcher at the Geosciences Research Division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. He holds a Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Wuppertal and a Doctor of Natural Sciences from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
His research focuses on stratospheric ozone depletion, verification of the Montreal Protocol compliance, and atmospheric trace gas dynamics. Key areas include AGAGE (Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment), halogenated compounds, perfluorinated compounds, and wildfire emissions. He develops measurement techniques like GC-FID/ECD and PTR-TOF-MS to track ODS emissions and their impacts on climate and ozone layer recovery.
- Leads AGAGE's monitoring of global atmospheric trace gases at 13+ sites
- Investigates equivalent effective stratospheric chlorine (EESC) trends
- Studies radiative forcing impacts of ozone-depleting substances
Current projects address emerging threats from short-lived halocarbons and HFC phase-out under the Kigali Amendment.
