Michael Westthorp is Senior Lecturer in Interiors and Programme Leader for MA Interiors (Architecture and Design) at Middlesex University's School of Design. His research examines sustainable adaptive reuse of commercial and leisure spaces, winning the 2021 'Conversations about Climate Change' competition. Westthorp investigates how technology transforms spatial understanding and design pedagogy.
As joint head of employability for the Interiors Programme, he develops industry-relevant curricula bridging academic training and professional practice. His current work explores digital tools for collaborative transnational design education and community-centered urban regeneration projects.
Westthorp previously founded Outline-Projects design practice, specializing in award-winning adaptive reuse implementations with international publication reach. His teaching includes undergraduate and postgraduate modules in spatial design, professional practice, and research methodologies.
