Dr. Michael E. Webber is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, holding dual appointments as the Sid Richardson Chair in the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the John J. McKetta Centennial Energy Chair in Mechanical Engineering. His work bridges engineering, policy, and commercialization, focusing on energy systems, grid reliability, hydrogen integration, and the food-energy-water nexus. From 2021–2024, he served as CTO of Energy Impact Partners, and previously as Chief Science and Technology Officer at ENGIE (2018–2021).
Webber earned a B.S. and B.A. from UT Austin, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. His research group, the Webber Energy Group, includes 4 post-PhD researchers, 15 graduate students, and 3 undergraduates, addressing complex energy challenges through multidisciplinary approaches. He has authored over 600 publications, including five books, and his work has been featured in Science, Nature, and PBS documentaries.
His awards include the Telly Awards, ASME Fellowship, and a Fulbright Technical Specialist appointment. Key research trends in his articles focus on hydrogen supply chains, grid resilience, carbon removal, and Texas energy policy. Advising and grants involve projects like the Texas Net-Zero roadmap and circular economy applications in oil and gas. The Webber Energy Group operates labs focused on energy-water nexus, policy analysis, and public education through initiatives like Watt Watchers of Texas.
