Michael Wagner is a Full Professor of Microbial Ecology at the University of Vienna, serving as Vice Director of the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science. He leads the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science and holds adjunct roles at Aalborg University and the Large Instrument Facility for Advanced Isotope Research. His research focuses on microbial physiology, nitrification, and environmental systems, particularly in wastewater and marine ecosystems. Key contributions include discoveries in complete nitrifiers (Comammox), sponge microbiomes, and single-cell analytical tools like NanoSIMS and Raman spectroscopy.
Wagner’s career spans leadership roles such as Founding Director of the Centre and Vice-Head of Microbiology departments. He has received prestigious awards, including the Wittgenstein Award (Austria’s highest science honor), Jim Tiedje Award, and ERC Advanced Grant. His work addresses global challenges like antibiotic resistance and planetary health through the Austrian Cluster of Excellence on Microbiomes.
Research interests include nitrogen cycle microbiology, microbial communities in engineered systems, and symbiotic relationships in marine sponges. His lab develops cutting-edge tools for functional microbial analysis and investigates microbial contributions to environmental sustainability and human health.
Notable projects include the Cluster of Excellence “Microbiomes Drive Planetary Health” (€35M), studies on Comammox physiology, and collaborations on gut microbiome interactions with neurodegenerative diseases. He supervises a dynamic group of researchers and has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles.
