Michael Wagner is Vice Director of the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science at the University of Vienna and Director of the FWF Cluster of Excellence 'Microbiomes Drive Planetary Health'. His research focuses on nitrifying microorganisms, microbial ecology, and the role of microbiomes in environmental and human health.
Wagner's group has discovered novel nitrifiers like complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox) and archaeal nitrifiers, revealing unexpected physiological traits. He pioneers single-cell tools for environmental microbiology and studies wastewater and sponge microbiomes.
Articles span antibiotic resistance in wastewater, gut microbiome-drug interactions, climate mobility, and microbial niche specialization. Recent work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches linking microbiology to planetary health challenges.
Awards include the FWF Wittgenstein Award (Austria's highest science prize), Jim Tiedje Award, and Schrödinger Prize for groundbreaking contributions to microbial ecology.
He leads international collaborations and supervises doctoral researchers in microbiology, ecology, and environmental science.
