Michael W Beck is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Eastern Illinois University. His educational background includes a B.S. in Chemistry (Biochemistry concentration) from Tennessee Technological University (2007-2011) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan (2011-2015). Prior to his faculty role, he served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Chicago (2015-2019) and conducted research at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea. His research focuses on developing chemical tools to study spatially organized chemistry in human health, particularly investigating tissue-specific and subcellular enzyme activity. The Beck Research Group employs techniques spanning organic synthesis, molecular docking, microscopy, and cell culture to create chemical probes and therapeutics.
Professor Beck has received several prestigious awards, including the 2018 Gordon Research Conference Poster Award, 2015 ASBMB Travel Award, and multiple best poster awards between 2014-2016. He currently leads two major grants as Principal Investigator (PI): NSF LEAPS-MPS funding (2022-2025) for peroxisome targeting technologies, and NIH R15 AREA funding (2024-2027) investigating carboxylesterase activity variability in drug interactions.
His teaching responsibilities include courses like General Chemistry I (CHM 1310G), General Chemistry Laboratory I (CHM 1315G), and Biochemistry I (CHM 3450). The Beck Research Group's current projects emphasize fluorogenic tools for enzyme activity assessment and modular subcellular targeting systems to deliver probes to organelles, aiming to improve disease understanding and therapeutic development.
