Michael Vecchio is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in instrumental music education. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Michigan with a cognate in wind band conducting. His research focuses on musical creativity within instrumental ensembles, creative agency development, and the role of large ensembles in teacher education. Vecchio has contributed to Arts Education Policy Review and co-authored a chapter in Musicianship-Focused Curriculum and Assessment, 2nd Edition.
Previously, he taught in public schools in New York and Chicago and served as assistant conductor for the Michigan Youth Symphonic Band and the University of Michigan Band Alumni Association Concert Band. His professional experience includes teaching at Eastern Michigan University and Adrian College.
Vecchio's research explores Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP) and the preparation of music teaching artists. He has presented at conferences such as the American Educational Research Association and the Society for Music Teacher Educators. His education includes a Bachelor’s in Music Education and Euphonium Performance from Ithaca College and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan.
