Michael Van Dussen is a Professor of Literature in the Department of English at McGill University, specializing in Middle English literature, manuscript studies, and medieval religious controversy. He directs the Lollard Society and is a member of the Global Pasts Research Group at McGill’s Yan P. Lin Centre. His research focuses on late-medieval religious texts, particularly Wycliffite and Hussite controversies, and their circulation across Europe. He holds SSHRC grants for projects on reformist encyclopedias and medieval manuscript culture.
Van Dussen earned his B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University and M.A./Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He previously taught at Pennsylvania State University and Ohio State University.
His research interests include medieval encyclopedias, book history, and the intersection of literature and law. He has published extensively on topics such as medieval travel writing, manuscript circulation, and late-medieval religious debates. His current SSHRC-funded project examines Wycliffite manuscripts in England and Bohemia, culminating in a monograph and catalog.
Van Dussen has received numerous awards, including the Faculty of Arts Award for Distinction in Research (2019) and the Louis A. Dudek Award for Teaching (2014). His work bridges interdisciplinary approaches to medieval studies, emphasizing global connections and textual networks.
