Michael Tomz serves as the William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. He holds additional appointments as a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Stanford King Center on Global Development, and Landreth Family University Fellow in Undergraduate Education.

Tomz's research spans International Relations, Comparative Politics, American Politics, and Political Methodology, with focus areas including sovereign debt reputation systems, political economy, and public opinion analysis. His award-winning book Reputation and International Cooperation: Sovereign Debt across Three Centuries established foundational frameworks in international cooperation theory.
His scientific accolades include the Karl Deutsch Award for IR contributions, Giovanni Sartori Award for qualitative methods, and multiple APSA section best paper awards. Teaching excellence is recognized through Stanford's Walter J. Gores Award, Cox Medal, and Dean's Award.
Tomz directs the Summer Research College program for undergraduates and has secured National Science Foundation research funding. His mentorship emphasizes structured research opportunities for early-career scholars.
