Michael Thompson is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, located at Lash Miller Chemical Laboratories on the St. George Campus. He holds adjunct roles as Adjunct Professor at the University of Limerick and Honorary Associate in Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Liverpool. His research group focuses on interdisciplinary bioanalytical chemistry, developing label-free detection techniques for biomedical applications, including clinical diagnostics, biocompatibility of medical devices, and nanotoxicology. Key projects involve ultra-high-frequency acoustic wave systems (EMPAS) for biomarker detection, anti-fouling surface chemistry for stents and catheters, and theranostic technologies for endotoxin removal. The lab also designs advanced instruments like the scanning Kelvin nanoprobe for surface analysis of biomolecules and materials.
Research collaborations span institutions such as the Tyndall National Institute, Krembil Research Institute, and international universities. His team includes graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and international affiliates with expertise in microelectronic engineering, surface chemistry, and biosensor technology. Notable applications target early detection of ovarian cancer, anti-thrombogenic stent coatings, and real-time cation measurement in neurological tissues.
Alumni of the lab hold positions in academia, industry, and research institutions worldwide, including roles at Eli Lilly, Bruker Corporation, and Simon Fraser University. Thompson’s work emphasizes translational research, aiming to bridge fundamental science with clinical and biomedical innovations.
