Prof. Dr. Michael Strupp serves as Professor and Senior Physician at the Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), based at University Clinic Großhadern. As a regular member of MCN and full member of GSN, he directs clinical and research activities in vestibular disorders within one of the world's top 20 neurology clinics (Newsweek 2025 ranking). His work integrates basic science with patient care across LMU's 350+ staff neurological facility.
His research spans:
- Vestibular compensation mechanisms after lesions
- Immunological pathways in bilateral vestibulopathy/Cogan's syndrome
- Vestibular-ocular-motor-sensorimotor system interactions
- High-resolution MRI applications in vestibular neuritis
- Pharmacological treatments for vestibular disorders
Publication analysis (2011-2012) reveals three dominant trends: (1) Vestibular pharmacology (betahistine/aminopyridines), (2) Neurovirological mechanisms in vestibular neuritis, and (3) Vestibular-hippocampal interactions affecting spatial memory. His work consistently connects molecular neurobiology with functional imaging outcomes.
Prof. Strupp has advised doctoral candidates including GSN-graduate Dr. Tatiana Bremova-Ertl. He collaborates within LMU's Neurology Study Center and Early Clinical Trial Unit, focusing on translational research from bench to bedside. His team actively investigates vestibular rehabilitation, somatosensory substitution, and prevention of neurological complications like post-lumbar puncture headache.
