Michael Stead is a Lecturer in Sustainable Design Futures at Lancaster University's School of Design and a member of the Imagination Design Research Lab. He is also: Research Excellence Framework (REF2029) Impact Lead for the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts; a member of the Impact Accelerator Executive Board and the Faculty of Arts & Social Science/Lancaster Management School Research Ethics Committee; a Fellow of the AdvanceHE Higher Education Academy (FHEA); and leads the Imagination Sustainable Regenerative Design Futures research group.

Michael's research applies Research through Design, Speculative Design, Co-Design, and More-than-Human Design to prototype sustainable futures. He explores the interplay between data-driven technologies (IoT, AI, Digital Fabrication) and sustainability challenges like Net Zero 2050 and Circular Economy. His work emphasizes the responsible decentralization of technologies through themes like Right-to-Repair, Data-driven Sustainability, and Post-growth Innovation.
Michael's recent publications focus on AI sustainability, IoT repairability, and design pedagogy for regenerative futures. His funded projects include InterNET ZERO (£249K), Fixing the Future (£389K), and Generation Fix (£18K).

Teaching & Supervision: Michael convenes modules like Design for Sustainability and Imagination Lab, and supervises 7 PhD researchers. He also serves on review boards for ACM JCSS and participates in professional networks like the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network.
