Michael Sparer is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. His research focuses on healthcare policy, particularly health insurance and delivery systems for low-income populations, the influence of American federalism on health policy, Medicaid managed care, and intergovernmental health politics in the U.S. and UK.

His current projects include evaluating federal/state efforts to stabilize the public health workforce, analyzing Medicaid’s role in addressing social determinants of health, and authoring a book on federalism’s impact on the U.S. healthcare system. He has received honors including the RWJ Health Policy Investigator Award (2003), Mailman School Student Government Association Teacher of the Year (twice), and the 2010 Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching.
