PD Dr. Michael Sommerauer is a senior physician and head of the neurological sleep laboratory at the Center for Neurology, Clinic for Parkinson's, Sleep and Movement Disorders, University Hospital Bonn, and affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn. He completed his medical training at RWTH Aachen University and earned a doctorate in biochemistry. After neurological training at the University Hospital Zurich, he completed his habilitation at the University of Cologne on sleep-wake disorders in Parkinson's disease.
His research focuses on isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) as an early prodromal sign of Parkinson's disease. He leads a longitudinal cohort of over 125 iRBD patients to study disease progression. Another major research theme involves multimodal neuroimaging, including PET and MRI, to detect functional and structural brain changes in Parkinson’s and related disorders. His work bridges clinical neurology with translational neuroscience.
Dr. Sommerauer has been supported by competitive fellowships, including the Else Kröner Excellence Fellowship and a Swiss National Science Foundation postdoctoral grant. His research stay at Aarhus University Hospital’s PET Center under David Brooks and Per Borghammer strengthened his expertise in molecular brain imaging.
- Else Kröner Excellence Fellowship
- Swiss National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship
He has established an independent research group focused on early detection of Parkinson’s disease. His leadership of the neurological sleep laboratory at Bonn positions him at the forefront of clinical and research advances in sleep neurology and neurodegeneration.
