Michael Smith is a Professor in the History department at Ithaca College's School of Humanities and Sciences, where he has been teaching since 2001. His work focuses on environmental history, climate emergency, and the role of history in fostering sustainability and civic engagement.

His research interests include environmental history, U.S. history, and the intersection of historical narratives with contemporary climate challenges. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Sabana Grande, Nicaragua, examining sustainability initiatives and the environmental history of transoceanic canal schemes. Additionally, he explores the history of the organized summer camp movement in American culture, as well as the scholarship of teaching and learning.
The trends in his research articles highlight a strong focus on local and global sustainability, the implications of historical narratives on current environmental policies, and educational reform strategies. His work often bridges academic scholarship with practical applications in community-based projects and digital humanities.
Michael Smith has received notable scientific awards and grants:
- Fulbright grant for environmental history research in Nicaragua (fall 2017)
- NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up Grant for "Untangling the Web of Historical Thinking" (2005-06)
- Carnegie Scholar at the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) during the 2005-06 academic year
He has advised on curricular reforms and co-edited Citizenship Across the Curriculum (Indiana University Press, 2010) with Rebecca Nowacek and Jeff Bernstein. He is involved in the Local Environmental History Project and contributes to public history through digital platforms and community engagement.
