Dr. Michael Smith (1932–2000) was a Nobel Laureate and pioneering figure in biotechnology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He served as a Professor and contributed to the foundation of the Michael Smith Laboratories, an interdisciplinary hub for biotechnology research. His groundbreaking work on site-directed mutagenesis revolutionized genetic engineering, earning him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1993). Smith’s legacy includes his humanitarian efforts, such as donating Nobel Prize funds to support Canadian science and education.
