Michael Smith

Dr. Michael Smith (1932–2000) was a Nobel Laureate and pioneering figure in biotechnology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He served as a Professor and contributed to the foundation of the Michael Smith Laboratories, an interdisciplinary hub for biotechnology research. His groundbreaking work on site-directed mutagenesis revolutionized genetic engineering, earning him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1993). Smith’s legacy includes his humanitarian efforts, such as donating Nobel Prize funds to support Canadian science and education.

Research Interests: Smith’s work centered on chemical synthesis of DNA, molecular biology, and biotechnological applications. His innovations in genetic manipulation techniques remain foundational in modern biology and medicine.

Scientific Achievements: In addition to the Nobel Prize, he received numerous honors including the Royal Society of Canada Fellowship and the Order of Canada.
