Dr. Michael Short is an Associate Professor (Teaching) in Planning at The Bartlett School of Planning, University College London. He has over a decade of experience at UCL, with prior roles in academia and practice including Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at UWE Bristol. His research focuses on urban form, density, queer pedagogies, and conservation of recent past architecture. He serves in leadership roles such as Postgraduate Tutor, Education Committee member, and co-chair of research clusters on planning education and comparative urbanism.

His research explores design quality in historic environments, conservation of recent architecture, and LGBTQ+ inclusivity in urban planning education. Recent work analyzes density management in London and Manchester, queer lens in planning history, and engaged urban pedagogies through participatory co-design methods. He is Co-PI on a UCL-University of Toronto partnership project examining post-COVID urban transformations until 2025.
