Dr. Michael Scott Van Wagenen is an Associate Professor of History (since 2012) and Internship Coordinator at Georgia Southern University's Department of History, housed within the College of Arts and Humanities. He holds a B.A. from Brigham Young University (1992), an MAIS from the University of Texas at Brownsville (1999), and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah (2009). His research focuses on Public History, U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, Film and New Media in History, Battlefield Archaeology, and Folklore.
Teaching includes courses like HIST 3231 (Introduction to Public History) and graduate seminars in Public History. He coordinates internships and non-thesis projects in the field. His award-winning book Remembering the Forgotten War (2012) received the National Council on Public History Book Award (Honorable Mention, 2013). He has also produced documentary films and directs the Ogeechee International History Film Festival.
Professional accolades include grants from the National Park Service, Clements Center, and others. Current projects include a book on historical documentary filmmaking and a study of the Ponce family in Mexico's Parral Mining District, exploring race and migration.
