apl. Prof. Dr. Michael Schredl is a prominent dream researcher affiliated with the Sleep Laboratory of the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim (ZI). His work focuses on dream memory, aging effects on dreaming, and the relationship between dreams and psychological processes.
His research interests span dream memory changes with age, connections between visual memory and dream recall, dream length and verbal short-term memory, and the psychological interpretation of typical dreams like falling. He has investigated how traumatic experiences persist in dreams across generations, particularly wartime experiences among the elderly.
Prof. Schredl developed expertise in nightmare treatment through Imaginary Rehearsal Therapy, a technique where patients write down nightmares, develop coping strategies, and mentally rehearse them to reduce nightmare frequency. His research also explores the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality, particularly among older adults, in collaboration with the Institute of Sports in Heidelberg.
His work bridges sleep medicine and psychological dream research, clarifying misconceptions about dreaming and restful sleep. He emphasizes that dreaming itself doesn't impair sleep quality, though excessive dream recall concerns sometimes bring patients to his laboratory.
