Michael Schlund is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Natural Resources at the Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente. His research focuses on monitoring land cover and estimating biophysical parameters of vegetation using active remote sensing across forests and agricultural systems. This includes developing algorithms for vegetation height, structure, and biomass retrieval from SAR and laser scanning data.
Education:
- PhD, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, 2011-2015
- Master, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, 2008-2011
- Bachelor, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, 2005-2008
Research interests span remote sensing applications in ecosystem services, resilience studies of forests and agricultural systems, and upscaling quantitative information from field measurements to airborne platforms. His work integrates empirical modeling and data science techniques to understand ecological transformations.
Recent publications emphasize innovative uses of Sentinel-1 and LiDAR data for crop monitoring, forest structure analysis, and global tree morphology studies, reflecting a strong focus on sustainable environmental management.
Research collaborations extend internationally, with field studies conducted across Europe and Southeast Asia.
