Michael Scardaville is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of South Carolina's College of Arts and Sciences, specializing in Latin American and Mexican history. He holds a PhD from the University of Florida and teaches courses spanning colonial Latin America, Mexican history, and human rights in Latin America.
His research examines juridical dimensions of state formation and intersections between legal and popular cultures in 18th-19th century Mexico City. A National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship supported his forthcoming book The Restrained Leviathan: Public Order and the Judicial State in Mexico City, 1737-1836, analyzing criminal law's role in state development. Scardaville affiliates with the Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies, supporting multidisciplinary research on Southeastern Latino communities.
