Michael S. Michael

Michael S. Michael is a Professor in Economics at the Department of Finance, School of Economics and Management, University of Cyprus. He holds a PhD in Economics from the State University of New York at Buffalo (1987), a MA in Economic Statistics and Econometrics from Athens University of Economics and Business (1982), and a BA in Economics from the same institution (1980). He has served in various academic roles including Assistant Professor (1987-93) and Associate Professor (1993-95) at the University of Connecticut, USA, and as Associate Professor (1993-99) and Professor (1999-present) at the University of Cyprus. He has held administrative roles such as Chairman of the Department of Economics (1997-2002, 2006-2012) and served on the University Senate (1997-2002, 2007-2011, 2015-2017).

His research focuses on International Trade, Public Finance, and the intersection of Trade and Environmental Policy. His work examines tax competition, capital mobility, pollution abatement strategies, and migration policy interactions between host and source countries. He has contributed to understanding welfare implications of environmental policy reforms and fiscal federalism.

He has served as Co-Editor of the journal Ekonomia (2000-2015) and is on the Editorial Board of the Review of Development Economics. His scientific awards include his appointment as Research Fellow at the Center of Economic Studies and ifo Institute (CESifo) in Germany.

He has advised numerous students and collaborated on research in tax policy, environmental economics, and migration studies. His projects often involve interdisciplinary approaches to economic challenges, including environmental spillovers and cross-border capital movements.
