Michael Rubens is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on industrial organization topics such as vertical contracting, monopsony/oligopsony power, and firm productivity. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from KU Leuven.
He is a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), contributing to policy-relevant research on labor markets and market structure. His work examines how buyer power affects technological adoption, labor exploitation dynamics, and welfare outcomes. Recent studies include analysis of collusion among buyers, productivity measurement in mining sectors, and the welfare implications of asymmetric market power.
