Michael Rollo is an Associate Professor and Film Department Head at the University of Regina within the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance. His academic career focuses on experimental approaches to film production and theory.
His research interests include:
- Documentary and material cinema
- Darkroom photography
- Film curation
- Expanded cinema practices
- Film collectives and artist-run labs
- Explorations of vanishing communication cultures
- Investigations of rural industries and transitional spaces
Rollo's creative practice thematizes memory, history, and autobiography through alternative approaches to non-fiction cinema. His work has gained international recognition with screenings at major festivals including Ann Arbor Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, EXiS Experimental Film Festival in Seoul, and Rotterdam International Film Festival.
As an academic leader, Rollo serves as the head of the Film Department while maintaining active creative practice. He is a founding member of Montreal's experimental film collective Double Negative and Independent Visions in Regina (SK), demonstrating his commitment to both institutional academic work and independent film communities.
