Dr. Michael Ritter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs at Washington State University (WSU), within the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Iowa and a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His research focuses on elections, voting laws, voter registration, inequality, and comparative politics. He is the co-creator of the County Election Administration index and the Postal Index, which assess election administration and postal service impacts on voting accessibility. His 2020 book Accessible Elections: How the States Can Help Americans Vote (Oxford University Press) examines state policies influencing voter turnout. Ritter has received the Instructor of the Year award at WSU and recognition as a top online instructor. He teaches courses on American politics, election administration, research methods, and comparative politics.
His current research includes evaluating the impact of automatic voter registration and mail voting reforms. He has published in journals like Election Law Journal and Social Science Quarterly, and is co-authoring a textbook on American politics. Ritter’s work bridges theoretical and applied perspectives, emphasizing equitable election systems and policy analysis.
