Michael R.L. Odell is Professor of STEM Education and Roosth Endowed Chair at The University of Texas at Tyler with joint appointments in the College of Education and Psychology and College of Engineering. He serves as Co-Coordinator for the Ed.D. in School Improvement Program and Co-Director of the UTeach Program, having implemented initiatives that doubled STEM teacher production and established laboratory charter schools across multiple campuses.
Dr. Odell's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction/Science Education from Indiana University
- M.A.T. in Science Education from University of Texas at Dallas
- B.A. in Geoscience with Literature minor from University of Texas at Dallas
His research centers on STEM and Engineering Education, School Improvement, and Education Policy, driving the creation of the Ingenuity Center (one of Texas' seven designated STEM hubs) and UT Tyler University Academy charter schools serving as teacher training laboratories. He has secured over $60 million in funding to expand research infrastructure and develop innovative educational programs statewide.
Administrative leadership includes former roles as Director of the School of Education and Vice President for Sponsored Research. He teaches courses in elementary science education, physical geology, and educational foundations while holding Texas certification for Secondary Level (6-12) Earth Science/English instruction.
