Michael R. King is the E.D. Butcher Chair of Bioengineering and CPRIT Scholar at Rice University, serving as Special Advisor to the Provost for Life Science Collaborations with the Texas Medical Center. His research focuses on mechanobiology, immunoengineering, and cancer metastasis, with emphasis on cellular responses to fluid shear stress and nanomedicine applications. King holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania.
He leads the King Lab, which develops 3D in vitro models of metastasis and investigates mechanotransduction in immune and cancer cells. Key projects include engineering fluid shear stress-activated immune therapies and superhydrophobic surfaces for cancer aggregate cultures. His work is funded by NIH and CPRIT, and he mentors postdocs and graduate students in biomedical engineering.
King serves as Editor-in-Chief of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering and has held leadership roles in AIMBE, BMES, and other professional societies. His honors include fellowships in AAAS, NAI, and multiple teaching awards. The King Lab also actively seeks donations to advance cancer research efforts.
