Michael Pravica is a Professor of Physics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he serves as Physics Department Assessment Coordinator. With a Ph.D. in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from Harvard University (1998), he has established himself as a leading researcher in high-pressure physics and x-ray chemistry. His work bridges fundamental physics with practical applications, particularly in the synthesis of novel materials under extreme conditions.
Pravica's research primarily focuses on the physics and chemistry of matter subjected to extreme conditions including high pressure, temperature, and radiation. He has pioneered a field he calls "useful hard x-ray induced chemistry," using highly ionizing x-rays to initiate controlled chemical reactions in isolated environments. His work has led to significant discoveries including the synthesis of doped polymeric carbon monoxide and novel structures of cesium superoxide. He is also transitioning into biophysics to apply his radiation expertise to vaccine and cancer treatment development. His research utilizes advanced facilities including the Advanced Photon Source, National Synchrotron Light Source, and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on X-ray induced chemistry, high-pressure material synthesis, and fluorine chemistry at extreme conditions. Pravica has successfully secured significant research funding, including approximately $750,000 in equipment from Los Alamos National Laboratory, and holds multiple patents related to semiconductor doping and X-ray chemistry.

Beyond his research, Pravica is an active science communicator, having appeared in Bleacher Report's "No Script" with Marshawn Lynch, contributed to documentaries, and published numerous op-eds on science policy. He maintains a strong commitment to STEM education and advocacy, frequently engaging with policymakers and the public on the importance of scientific research and education.
