Dr. Michael Peters serves as an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. His clinical practice focuses on critical care medicine, pulmonary function testing, and specialized care for patients with severe asthma. Peters directs a research program at the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus dedicated to identifying molecular mechanisms driving severe asthma.
- BA in Economics from Emory University (2002)
- MD from State University of New York, Stony Brook (2007)
- Internal Medicine residency at University of Colorado (2010)
- Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at UCSF (2014)
- MAS in Epidemiology from UCSF (2015)
Peters' research centers on severe asthma heterogeneity, with particular emphasis on metabolic dysfunction, type 2 inflammation, and precision medicine approaches. His work investigates how factors like obesity, insulin resistance, and eosinophilic inflammation influence asthma severity and treatment response. He has pioneered research on mucus plugging, air trapping, and novel biomarkers for asthma phenotyping.
Analysis of Peters' recent publications reveals a strong focus on asthma endotyping, with significant contributions to understanding how metabolic factors interact with inflammatory pathways in severe asthma. His work frequently examines biomarkers like eosinophil peroxidase, explores the relationship between obesity and airway dysfunction, and investigates precision medicine approaches for asthma management. Peters has been instrumental in large collaborative efforts like the Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP) and the Precision Interventions for Severe and/or Exacerbation-Prone (PrecISE) Asthma Network.
- American Society for Clinical Investigation Young Physician Scientist Award (2022)
- Parker B. Francis Fellow (2015-2018)
- ATS Abstract Scholarship (2015)
- ATS Scientific Abstract Award (2014)
As Principal Investigator, Peters leads NIH-funded research including the K23HL138303 grant "Uncovering Biologic Mechanisms of Severe Asthma" and a Nutrition and Obesity Research Center project investigating the role of metabolic dysfunction and gut microbiome in severe asthma. His research has substantial clinical implications, particularly for developing personalized treatment approaches for severe asthma patients. Peters collaborates extensively with prominent researchers in the field through major networks like SARP and PrecISE.
Peters' laboratory work focuses on molecular mechanisms of severe asthma, particularly examining how metabolic factors interact with inflammatory pathways. His research integrates clinical data with molecular analyses to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers for asthma endotypes.
