Professor Michael Payne holds the Chair of Computational Physics at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory within the Theory of Condensed Matter department. He is renowned for developing the CASTEP software package and contributing to the ONETEP and LOTF modelling schemes. His work focuses on first principles total energy calculations and linear scaling methods, enabling quantum mechanical analysis of molecular and material properties.
His research emphasizes advancing computational tools accessible to all researchers, with over 280 publications (35,000+ citations) and $40M in CASTEP software sales. Recognized as the 23rd most cited UK physical scientist (1990–1999), his contributions bridge theoretical physics and practical software engineering.
