Michael Paul Lempert is an Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at the University of Michigan. He is affiliated with the Center for South Asian Studies and holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2004). His research focuses on linguistic anthropology, interaction, semiotics, and social theory, with a regional specialization in Tibet and South Asia. His work explores themes such as stance and affect, religion, and the intersection of language and power.
His notable publications include Creatures of Politics: Media, Message, and the American Presidency (co-authored with Michael Silverstein, Indiana University Press, 2012) and Discipline and Debate: The Language of Violence in a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery (University of California Press, 2012). These works demonstrate his expertise in analyzing communication dynamics within political and religious contexts.
