Michael Patrick Ward is a Professor in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences and Principal Research Scientist in Ornithology at the Illinois Natural History Survey. He also holds the Stuart L. and Nancy J. Levenick Chair in Sustainability and is affiliated with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on avian ecology, predation dynamics, and conservation biology, with particular emphasis on songbird behavior, nest survival, and migratory patterns. Ward has authored over 150 scholarly publications and led numerous datasets on bird ecology.
His key research interests include ornithology, avian conservation, nest predation mechanisms, and landscape-scale ecological interactions. Recent work explores transmitter design for songbirds, embryonic survival strategies, and acoustic manipulation for species conservation.
Ward has received prestigious recognitions such as the AOS Fellow (2020) and NACTA Educator Award (2015). His contributions span academic advising, grant-funded projects, and leadership in interdisciplinary teams addressing sustainability challenges. He is actively involved in the Illinois Natural History Survey and collaborates internationally on avian conservation initiatives.
